If You Can Draw or Trace ...
Use with your slab roller between layers of canvas or slab mat, or you can use them with no more equipment than a rolling pin -- or even your bare hands. Create a slab of clay, and then roll, press or pound the mat into the clay surface for instant texture from these durable, easy-to-clean tools. Small: 7x9" Flexible Rubber Medium: 8x12" Firm, Flexible Rubber
The manufacturer recommends using a blunt-edged steel fettling knife (F97 or F96) for cutting clay directly on the SlabMat. You can use cornstarch as a release agent if you find that your clay slabs stick to SlabMat. Use separate pieces for different colors of clay to avoid contamination by cross-coloration.
An essential part of working on the slab roller. It provides a tough, durable, cleanable surface for the workspace. More importantly, canvas provides the top and bottom protective 'sandwich' layers to keep your clay from getting torn as you draw it through the rollers. The surface of the canvas also interacts with the knurled rollers for good 'grip' and traction. Our canvas comes from North Star at a heavier grade and weight than you'll find at most fabric stores.
