Mayco Fundamentals Underglazes may be applied to wet clay, greenware, or cone 04 bisque; use for design or solid coverage, firing range from cone 06 to cone 10. To intensify the color or for use on dinnerware, apply clear or matte clear glaze.
ONLY when using on wet clay or greenware - apply and allow to dry. Fire to shelf cone 04. If desired, apply clear glaze and refire to cone 06-05 for earthenware and cone 5-10 for stoneware.
Dry greenware can aborb the colors quickly resulting in surface problems. By applying a water-thinned first coat as a primer, it should help improve your firing results.
For use on bisque - lightly dampen the ware prior to applying to cone 04 bisque to help adhesion. Apply clear glaze if desired and refire earthenware to cone 06 and cone 5-10 for stoneware (check each product label for cone 10 results). Do not use spray application; use either brush or sponge to apply glaze. The colors are intermixable and create unique blends if mixed when wet. Perfect for using with your sgraffito designs! The matte finish can help create depth and contrast on work that is for decoration use only. Many of the glazes will hold up well to cone 6 firing temperatures.
Co-fire with Clear: these glazes can be fired in a single firing. A valuable time saver for classrooms or tight schedules. Outgasing can trap bubbles or create craters, so adding 15 minutes to the hold time should fix any surface issues.
Heat work is good! If cone 06 does not develop the color you want - go hotter. Mayco recommends cone 03-04 and some artists go even hotter. Fundementals can take the heat so push them to get the vibrancy that you want.
Mixing colors is easy and fun. Use brushstrokes to blend and create shading; mix colors to create your own style; layer without concern of intermixing - which is perfect for majolica work. Add thin lines and details with the confidence that Fundementals will NOT move.
Mayco's Fundementals Underglazes are nontoxic and foodsafe as long as clear glaze has been applied over entire glazed surface.
